Air Compressors and How They Function

In different sectors one of the most used equipment is the air compressors as they are used in automation and assembly, agriculture, construction and the chemical manufacturing industries. The air compressors function by converting power from an external source, primary an electric motor and diesel engines where they convert the electric power to the stored energy released in the form of pressurized air. Pressurized air from the compressor is used to power other machinery and equipment. Based on their method of operation, there are three types of industrial compressors that one can purchase in the market. Reciprocating compressors are the first kind of air compressors where they function as positive displacement compressors. They function by reducing the volume of the air thus increasing the pressure as they have pumps driven using pistons which are attached to the cylinders that compress and displace the air. The reciprocating compressors are further divided into direct drive compressors and the belt drive compressors where the belt-drive compressors are preferred due to their high output and durability. The reciprocating compressors are not only effective but also portable and suits the construction traders.

The second type of compressors is the rotary screw compressors which also function by positive displacement process. In their operation, the rotary screw compressors are smoother in comparison with the reciprocating compressors, as they use helical screws and not pistons and thus have less surges and vibration. They are also durable and also easy to maintain while their capacity is also larger than that of the reciprocating compressors. The rotary screw compressors also allow one to control the airflow as they come with variable speeds and are widely used in hospitals, construction sites and factories.

The last kind of the compressors is the centrifugal compressors which rely on the momentum gained through rotating a disk to pressurize and transfer air. They are capable of delivering extremely high pressures which are controlled by way of inlet guide vanes. Some of the applications of the centrifugal compressors include in automotive, air conditioners and refrigerators.
